Property Information

La Magione d’Orcia is located just 6 km from Radicofani, a striking hilltop village in southern Tuscany known for its imposing fortress and historic role along the Via Francigena pilgrimage route.

Set at 896 metres above sea level, Radicofani rises above the southern Val d’Orcia on a volcanic rock outcrop. Its 10th-century Rocca dominates the skyline and offers wide views across Monte Amiata, the Orcia Valley and into neighbouring regions on clear days. The town was an important defensive stronghold in the Middle Ages and remains closely linked to the ancient pilgrimage route between Canterbury and Rome.

Today, Radicofani offers everyday essentials without heavy tourism:

  • Grocery shops and local produce stores

  • Traditional trattorias and cafés

  • Weekly markets

  • Pharmacy and basic services

It remains authentic and lived-in, rather than polished or commercial.

Walking & Nature – A Pilgrim Landscape

The villa sits in one of the most walkable areas of the southern Val d’Orcia, particularly appealing for guests who enjoy meaningful landscapes rather than postcard viewpoints alone.

The Via Francigena passes nearby, offering well-marked walking routes through cypress-lined tracks, wheat fields and oak woodland. Guests can walk sections directly from the property or drive a short distance to access longer stretches.

One particularly rewarding local walk is towards La Palazzina, a historic rural estate set amidst open countryside. This area is known for its wide, cinematic views — expansive, empty horizons that feel almost untouched. Early morning and late afternoon light here is exceptional, making it ideal for photography and peaceful exploration.

Other nearby natural highlights include:

  • Monte Amiata (extinct volcano with forest trails)

  • Bagni San Filippo thermal springs (natural hot waterfalls)

  • Rolling gravel tracks ideal for cycling

  • Quiet country roads perfect for sunset walks

This part of Val d’Orcia feels vast, open and unspoilt.

Wine & Cultural Towns Nearby

La Magione d’Orcia sits at a crossroads between several major wine and cultural destinations:

  • Montepulciano – 35 km
Home of Vino Nobile and Renaissance architecture.

  • Montalcino – 50 km
Brunello wine country and panoramic hilltop views.

  • Chianciano Terme – 30 km
Thermal spa town with supermarkets and services.

  • Siena – 80 km
Gothic architecture and the Piazza del Campo.

Despite this access, the villa remains in a quieter southern pocket of the region, away from the heavier visitor flows around Pienza.

Accessibility

  • Florence Airport – 160 km

  • Pisa Airport – 230 km

  • Rome (via A1 motorway) approx. 2 hours

A car is essential in this area and allows easy exploration of Tuscany and northern Lazio.

Why This Location Is Special

This southern edge of the Val d’Orcia offers:

  • Dramatic volcanic landscapes

  • Deep Via Francigena history

  • Authentic hilltop village life

  • Access to thermal springs

  • Proximity to Brunello and Nobile wine regions

  • True peace and open space

Radicofani is less polished than Pienza, less commercial than San Gimignano — and that is precisely its strength. It offers a more elemental, historic and expansive Tuscany.

For guests seeking a large historic villa in Val d’Orcia with space, views and meaningful surroundings, this is one of the most distinctive locations in the region.
