A converted cottage, set on the side of a hill surrounded by forests and mountains, Le Lunghe is perfect for a quiet holiday for a couple or small family who are looking to relax and enjoy the countryside. The mature garden is beautifully kept by the friendly and helpful owner, Giancarlo. At the side of the two bedroomed cottage is a lovely covered veranda that looks out over the Serchio valley below, with spectacular views. The front of the cottage faces the village, a few minutes walk away, as well as the Apuan Mountain range. Le Lunghe is also a perfect location for keen hillwalkers due to it’s proximity to various hiking routes.

There is a 3.5m diameter, 90cm deep, lightweight swimming pool on the lawn which is great for play or cooling off, and a paved terrace as well as a delightful shaded eating area.

The house has been recently restored and extended and has a fully fitted dining kitchen, sitting room with sofa bed leading to the covered veranda and a large bathroom with shower and washing machine. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with twin beds or a double. Inside, this two-bedroom villa revels in its heritage, with traditional tiled floors. The kitchen has been made out of reclaimed chestnut wood and has an original stone fireplace with wood burning stove.

We spent a week in Giancarlo's holiday home. The house was practically furnished and the location was beautiful! Our car was not suitable for the last stretch of road, so Giancarlo picked us up and brought us back to our car on the day of departure. Giancarlo was very accommodating and helpful. Although we don't speak Italian, we were able to make ourselves understood. We enjoyed the days very much and recovered well.

I could look at the amazing views forever.

We chose the property with a wish list in mind: Scenery, tranquility, food, and wine. And we got it all, in spades. We had most meals under the rustic lean-to because we could look at the hills and mountains to the west, north and east. The garden is beautifully kept. There were trees with apples, pears, figs, olives and Giancarlo has a tomato vine which he encouraged us to pick. I mean, we are talking real, big, funny-shaped proper tomatoes. Delicious. As if that wasn't enough there were large rosemary bushes that went on the chicken on the BBQ and a sage that found its way into the vitello escallops we fried. Marsala wine at under 5 euros a bottle made it for an amateur's saltimbocca. Giancarlo, the host who lives next door (I use the term next door loosely) is a great fellow. Often checked to see we were ok but not in the least intrusive. The house is a restored farmhouse and all the plumbing, electrics, water, gas etc is bang up to date. TV is good and the wi-fi is excellent Shopping is easy in the huge Conad supermarket down the hill in Gallicano. The local restaurant, Il Totto, we went to four times in the week. They don't run a menu, just what they have fresh on the day. I had the best ever sliced steak in oil and balsamic sauce and we still savour the home-made ravioli with spinach and ricotta. The track down to the house is interesting but totally do-able. Our hire car, a humble 1.2litre Lancia which I dubbed "entrail-free" (gutless) made it up and down every day. In many ways this review doesn't do justice to the property. That's because it is so hard to describe serenity and mountain views. We were totally smitten by the variety of wildlife: goats, deer, friendly lizards, butterflies. In the evenings we liked to hear the owls call to each other and the sound of crickets after the sun went down.

Fantastic but remote so get organised with provisions!!

A really nice house, which is beautifully located. If you are looking for peace and relaxation you are exactly right. The views of the surrounding nature and the mountains are outstanding. In the nearby village of Sassi you can especially mention the restaurant Il Totto, where you can eat absolutely authentic. We felt very comfortable here and would like to have stayed. Also the owner Giancarlo is a very warm host.

We really enjoyed our week at Le Lunghe, which was beautifully presented and well equipped. Our only concern was the exposed metal reinforcing on the concrete section of the track leading to the house and we actually found it easier and more enjoyable to walk down the path from the road.

Herzlichen Dank!

A wonderful place to rest and enjoy the villages and place nearby. The livingroom maybe a little more extra equipped with two armchairs and a little table. Furthermore it was excellent. The bed and the shower ( nice hot ). The steep road to the house was a challenge but to do. The kitchen is fully equipped. There was even a washing machine. We will come certainly a next time. We loved our stay at Le Lunghe. The setting of the house is lovely, with wonderful views. The house was spotless and had everything we needed. We had very hot weather while we were there, so we were grateful for the pool in the garden. Once we had got used to driving up and down the steep roads, we visited lots of interesting and beautiful places. The nearby train station at Barga/Gallicano is also very handy for visiting Lucca and Pisa. The house is a good base for many places. The host was very friendly, and we enjoyed our day out with him visiting some of the nearby sights. The local restaurant Il Totto is fantastic, great food and extremely good value. We made several visits there to eat. Overall we felt we experienced a very genuine and authentic, beautiful part of Tuscany, thanks to the people, food and amazing scenery. We would love to come back one day.

We arrived in Pisa very late due to delays with the flights . I rang the lady whose number I had been given to obtain the key and she advised me the owner would meet us nearby to show us the way. This was our first introduction to Giancarlo and he is such a lovely man- doesn't speak a word of English though! The property itself is accessed via an unmade road which is a bit unnerving if you aren't good with heights but can be resolved by another walking route The farmhouse is simple but clean and absolutely fine with the most stunning views from the windows , you would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful location . The pool was great for cooling off in the heat. A truly amazing holiday was had by us all (4 adults)with Giancarlo taking us out for a day trip and showing us the sights. Lucca and the market at Castelnuovo are definitely worth a visit We will definitely be returning and we're very impressed with Friends of Tuscany for the detailed information

Fantastic location, high up in the mountains with spectacular views all around. A little difficult to find, but a phone call had the owner meet us at a local restaurant and direct us to the cottage. The owner Giancarlo was very welcoming and despite the language difficulty he made sure we had a great holiday and was very helpful. All the local shops and restaurants we visited were great, all in all a lovely relaxing two weeks.

We spent a week in Le Lunghe in early October. We were a bit unlucky with the weather, so it was important to have a good shelter! The cottage was perfect - terrific view and very cosy inside, with a log fire in the kitchen which made chilly evenings very snug indeed. It's a great spot and an ideal base for exploring the surrounding hills. Remote, away from it all feel, yet Lucca within easy striking distance. We hope to return.

Beautiful cottage with fantastic views.

A lovely cottage with all the essentials provided and very comfortable. Fantastic views over the valley with three sets of tables and chairs outside so it was possible to stay in the shade (or sun) as the day progressed. II Totto Restraunt/Bar in Sassi highly recommended and great value but a phrase book handy if languages are not your thing. Giancarlo (the owner) was very helpful and the flowers in the window boxes were beautiful. The driveway to the cottage can appear daunting but you soon get used to it.

My husband and I stayed at Le Lunghe in May. The location was incredibly beautiful. The house is exactly as it's pictured on the website. There are three different outdoor dining areas, and it was wonderful to sit out there, sip wine, and check out the view. The owners, Laura and Giancarlo, were extremely helpful and went out of their way to help us get acclimated. We were there for 5 nights, and I would gladly have stayed longer. Laura is very knowledgeable about hiking in the area and I would have liked to take advantage of that. It was too cool for the pool, but I'm sure it's delightful in the summer. The tiny village nearby was really appealing, with a very good restaurant. The house is pretty out of the way, but that was part of its appeal for us. You definitely need a car.

Le Lunghe is a lovely house in the beautiful Garfagnana region of Northern Tuscany, perched in a spectacular position on the outskirts of the medieval village of Sassi.

There is a lovely local restaurant in the village as well as a shop.

This would be an ideal holiday spot for hill walkers and nature lovers as the Apuan Alps above the village are cris-crossed with marked footpaths, as are the Appenine Mountains across the valley.

Garfagnana has the best walking in Tuscany and the owners can advise on routes or accompany you on guided walks. Other outdoor activities such as mountain biking, canyoning and horse riding can easily be arranged.

There are lovely outdoor swimming pools in Castelnuovo, Gallicano and Barga. All the pools are served by cafe bars and have fantastic views.

Close by, Barga is an atmospheric town with regular festivals, a weekly summer outdoor market under the stars, exhibitions and galleries.

Castelnuovo, 1000 feet below the house, is good for all kinds of shopping, has a a local market, two tourist information offices and many bars and restaurants.

Garfagnana is famous in Italy for the quality and value of its food, cooked in a simple, rustic style with the best of local ingredients
