To experience a traditional Easter holiday, here are the four must-see events taking place between April 9 and 17 in Garfagnana and the Serchio Valley.
April 13th in Castiglione di Garfagnana – Processione de’ Crocioni
The mysterious Processione de’ Crocioni is a religious procession dating back hundreds of years
An unidentified man from Castiglione, impersonates Christ whilst carrying a large wooden cross along the cobbled and winding streets in the medieval town of Castiglione. Wearing a white hooded robe to hide his identity, he is escorted by others, in various costumes, barefoot, chained and wearing a crown of thorns.
The evening starts at 8 pm from the Church of San Michele. The traditional Mass finishes abruptly by the sound of Roman soldiers and their drums and of chains dragging on the ground.
April 14th in Coreglia Antelminelli
Go to Coreglia to see the town’s inhabitants participate with traditional songs and decorate the sides of the roads with flowers and candles. The procession starts at 8.30 at the Church of San Rocco, stops at the Chiesa del Crocifisso where you can marvel at a wooden crucifix which dates back to the 15th century.
April 17th in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana
On a lighter note- The event held in the Fortezza di Castelnuovo invites you to enjoy workshops inspired by the air. Think hot air balloons (weather permitting) paper airplanes, soap bubbles and kites. Come here for a relaxing Easter Monday outdoors, picnicking in the spring air.
